The real teaching by Lord Srikrishna begins with 11th verse in the second chapter. This stanza is the heart of the great Gita. If we understand this stanza which is like a tree in a seed will provide the meaning of life.
Asochya anvasochastvam pragnavaadancha bhashase!
Gatasuna agatasumcha naanusochanti panditah!!
The Lord starts his teaching with this stanza.
You are grieving for those that should not be grieved for; yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.
This stanza looks so ordinary but it has a deeper meaning if we can understand. This verse has the whole of the essence of the upanishads. First we need to understand the real nature of human existence. From this stanza on wards, the pure philosophy in Geeta starts. In this material world every object has 5 elements and they are Sat, Chit, Ananda, Nama & Rupa. The first three are the real structure of the soul. The names and rupa (physical structure) will change all the time.
In this stanza the word "Asochyan" was used which means that we grief for those who should not be grieved for. How is this possible and why can't we grieve for our loved ones. But what is their real nature? this real nature does not vanish with time. This one does not have birth or death. Then the names and looks are not real and mere changing forms. That's why Lord says do not grieve for those who should not be grieved for. He never said not to have love and affection towards our loved ones. We should not link the grief and love.
At times we behave in such a way that we know every thing. This is where we take a wrong turn. We talk like a learned person. Who is really a learned man or realized soul? The real leaned man is some one who has gained the knowledge of the self. This self realized soul will just exist in this body and performs the duties to the extent that it needs to. They know the true colors of this life.
The Lord said that the wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.
Soul is eternal. When this truth is experienced life and death lose their identity. The intellect can make us look like a learned man and we can advise some one very wisely but the reality sets in when we face the problems. Our real personality comes out when we are in critical situations. Here the same thing happened with Arjuna also.
What can we learn from this Stanza?
If we learn the real nature of Jeeva, there will be no dejection.
Things happen depending on our Karma, so it is unwise to grieve for these events.
Those who are dead, will take a new body so it is unwise to cry for them.
The usual suffering in real life is either about the past events or future events. We constantly worry about the things that already happened in the past or worry about what will happen in the future.
The whole essence of the Bhagavadgita is ingrained in this one stanza.
If we can stay in the present, the grief will not disturb us.
We should not worry too much about the names and forms in this world.
We should really grieve about the ignorance that is surrounding us.
We need to grieve that we are unable to gain the knowledge of self.
We need to grieve because we do not have a Guru in our lives.
We should never grieve for this transient life or this impermanent world.
Om Sri Sainathaya Namah!
