In human life, the guru's place is pre-eminent. By keeping utmost faith in Guru alone, everything is obtained.
A devotee's entire strength is due to his guru. Devotion to the guru is superior to devotion to gods and goddesses.
The guru is the supreme being.

Bhagavadgita Saankya yogam 2.7 - Death to Birth

Image result for death to birth

Jaatasya hi dhruvo mruthyur dhruvam janma mrtasya cha!
Tasmad apariharyaardhe na tvam sochitumarhasi !!

For certain is death for the born, and certain is birth for the dead; therefore the inevitable you should not grieve.

Bhagavan is speaking in relation to the materialistic world on the out side to motivate Arjuna to follow his Dharma. He had to give him the confidence and self reliance that was essential to perform his duties. Then why he has to talk about this birth and death cycle. For a Jnani (self realized soul) there may not be birth and death, but for ordinary people this is the reality. As long as there is mind, thoughts,  and actions there will be rebirth. Arjuna might think that he is responsible for all the actions that he is performing, without understanding that previous karma plays a big role in one's own life.

The Gita says that death is certain for the born and birth is certain for the dead. Even the atheists say that we come from no where and we go no where when we die. This nowhere also signifies that there is unmanifest in between. They might not believe the reincarnation. That will be fine. The Theists ( People who believe in higher power) may have some differences in their believe system but the fundamental belief in God is same. Here some of the religions tried to go beyond science. Our Hindu scriptures explain in terms of consciousness and energy. They tried to show how the universe functions and how it operates. So if God is everywhere there is no place that this So called consciousness do not exist. The same consciousness exists in all living and nonliving beings.

What happens after death may be a mystery for lot of people but Hinduism explains more scientifically. Some of the religions tried to explain this but there could be some fallacies. Here Lord Krishna is talking about more than just death. Our thought process manufactures some of the thoughts where they are turned into actions. These actions give rise to consequences, these in turn will create new ideology and life. So the cycle continues.

The reality behind this "Birth death cycle" is its very nature, a stream of births and deaths which is unavoidable, inevitable fact no intelligent person should complain or cry over. It is like saying "Be a man and take the consequences". It is a direct consequence of our own deeds but not some one else is responsible for our problems.

What happens between Birth and death is what we call life. But what happens between death and Birth is what we call Avyaktha (unmanifest). Let us try to understand this. Since birth to death the humans go through so many emotions in everyday life. Some of them repeat frequently. But there are patterns in each life if we carefully observe. These patterns are due to certain "Vaasanas" some of which are strong. These strong vaasanas are like seedlings and they have to som how come out and manifest. So we need ideal conditions like perfect family, circumstances to full fill these desires. Until the perfect situation is created they can not germinate. So we have to be careful in wishing what we want especially when we are treading the path of spirituality. Because we do not want to be born again and we all need to attain Moksha (salvation).  By understanding this truth, we can live our life happily and be content with what we get.

That's why next verse talks about the futility of grieving for this impermanent life.

Avyaktadini bhutaani vyakta madhyaani bhaarata!
Avyakta nidhanaanyeva tatra ka paridevana !!

Beings are unmanifest in their beginning, are seen to be manifest in the middle state and they are unmanifest in the end. Knowing this truth, what is there to grieve about?

The manifest world of today will not be there in the end. We talk about stars disintegrating and being born. This universe is teaching some thing and science confirms this. If the energy is reintegrating and taking a shape in the form of galaxies; why we have hard time accepting this concept of Birth and death cycle. If we pollute our world around us, we face the consequences like natural disasters. This law of karma applies universally in nature. So let us understand the life, do not take it for granted, ignorance about a rule will not excuse us from the consequences.

Bhagavadgita 2.6- Sankya yogam-Soul un-manifest

Lord Krishna talked about how the soul is eternal and is all pervasive. It is described to be imperishable in the coming verses. This fact was mentioned in the second chapter from 19th verse to 25th verse.

Whoever considers the soul to be capable of killing or be killed, is considered to be ignorant; Soul neither kills, nor is killed.

The soul is never born, nor it ever dies; nor does it become after being born. For, it is unborn, eternal, everlasting and primeval; even though the body is slain, soul is not.

The soul is free from birth and decay. The man who knows this fact that soul is imperishable and eternal- how and whom will he cause to be killed, how and whom will he kill?

Just as a man casts off his worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so also the embodied self casts of its worn-out bodies and enter others which are new.

Weapons cleave it not, fire burns it not, waters wets it not, wind dries it not.

The self can not be cut, nor burnt, nor wetted, nor dried up. It is eternal, all pervading, stable, immovable and ancient.

This self is said to be unmanifest, unthinkable and unchangeable. Therefore, knowing This to be such, you should not grieve.

Bhagavan described the Atman in clear terms in the above verses. What is the advantage of knowing this truth? How is this useful to us?

We talked about how the truth is evident and obvious in each and every issue. If we understand this basic truth behind each aspect of our lives, there will be no sorrow. The biggest hurdle we ever face is "death". Bu we always assume that we are not going to die that day or that moment. We learned to pity someone else's death.  We hear statements like "He was fine until yesterday; O' poor man just died; how bad it is". But the reality is that every one has to face this dance one day or the other. But we feel confident (ignorant) that death will not touch us now". Every action in our life is to make an effort to live longer. We want to earn money so that we can live comfortably for ever. This is so unreal to think this way because every one has to leave this body and leave behind everything.

Bhagavan brings this false pretense to the fore front and make us realize the truth.  It feels like Lord Krishna was talking about the war when he says "The soul neither kills, not gets killed". He also talks about how we are not responsible for any action that we perform. We think we are rearing our children and we feel that we caused pain or pleasure to other people.

We expect that everything has to go through us even if we do not have control on certain issues. We also assume somehow that we took care of business and without us nothing is possible. This only adds ego or pain to us. If we realize that we are a little guy in the big world, the pain might be little less. Here the soul has no involvement in this whole process. Only mind and body perform their duties.

The Soul has no changes and never has to transform. Only the body will change. The body goes through 6 Vikaaraas (changes). 1) Birth 2) exist 3) Growth 4) transformation 5) decay 6) death. These are the six changes that everything in this universe goes through.  What is the Truth here and what we have to understand here? Once we are born, we have to go through this transformation.  Nothing happens to Soul even if this body disintegrates.   If we understand this truth, then we realize that we are only instruments of past karma.

We cast off old clothes and get new ones as needed. In a similar way Jeevatma (Kaarana Sarira and Sukshma sarira) will leave the body once the karma effect is finished with that particular body. It is easy to get rid of the old clothes and get new ones but our attachment to this body is beyond explanation. A small kid has been wearing the same old clothes for a while, and a mother wants to put on new clothes. Then the child will cry to let go the old clothes because he likes them so much. But the mother takes them anyway. The child will forget about this after a while. We are also same. Once we take new body, we forget everything about the past lives. This is very essential to grasp so that we can understand this truth. Then it will be easier to go through the changes of life.

Bhagavadgita 2.5- Saankya Yogam- Truth – Essence of life

We are influenced greatly by the pleasures and pains of daily life. By knowing this truth, can we make an effort to pause our lives and analyze what’s going on? We do not pay attention to these ultimate realities of life because we are afraid to face the truth. We see some people in our communities who worked all of their lives. How is this possible to work like this, doing the same job for 20 to 30 years? This was felt as a responsibility of the household taking care of the family. We do not have time to think and we never question for a moment why we are doing this? This was little easier with the past generations but now we became more restless and impatient. Even if we have a good job and better financial situation, still we are not happy and we continue to struggle. We feel inadequate no matter how much we have. Some of us worry about the kids, their education, or worry about getting better things in life. We worry about relationships also. We stopped understanding the real meaning of life and our responsibility as a human being. We do not see what is real and what is not real.

In Bhagavadgita, the Lord says,

Naasato vidyate bhavo naa bhavo vidyate satah!
Ubhayorapi drusto antah anayoh tatvadarsibhih!!

The unreal has no existence; and the real never ceases to be; the reality of both has thus been seen by the knowers of the truth.

This verse seems so simple but it has the real meaning of life. This has the essence of whole Vedanta. The real goal of Vedanta is understanding the meaning of this verse, applying this in daily life and experiencing this in every aspect of life.

The society that we live in will certainly influence all of us either partly or completely. We learned to live our lives either to satisfy others or to be praised by someone. We think we will be happy if we attain certain education, better financial situation or good position in the society. When we are young education is very important. The education used to make us “learned men” but now a days the entire goal of education has changed.  We became totally restless and unhappy as consumers of this great gift of life. Our education system is not teaching our next generation to understand the realities of life.

Are we getting education only to earn a living?

Is this education teaching our kids to be selfish and disrespecting elders and community around us?

Is there real wisdom in our education pattern?

This lack of wisdom reflects in our daily life. We need better life as a whole not just a good job or being rich.

As there is lack of wisdom in our education, we also miss the reality in our thinking. We are unable to visualize the truth in our life. In a flowing river the water is constantly changing at a given time. But the riverbed is constant. There is no change in the riverbed. In a similar way, there is a reality in our daily actions that we are unable to see. This truth will never change. If we can understand and grasp this truth behind each and every action, we will not be influenced by the odds of life.

Marriage is the next step that lot of human beings face and struggle with. Do we really understand the real meaning behind this sacred bond? This part of life is so significant for three quarters of our lives. How much emphasis is being given to this most important part of human life in our education system? Are we preparing our kids for this phase of life? How can they be happy if they do not understand the real meaning of marriage?

There is an inherent truth in each and every action of our daily activities. It has been difficult to see this side of life. We are so immersed in watching the moving images on a static screen, and we cannot visualize the existence of a white screen behind. When the material world is projecting images on the screen of Atman, we are not able to experience that universal energy.  But we can realize that these images are not real and in a similar way, the objects in this world are also not permanent. This kind of thinking can be applied in our daily life. If we carefully analyze and study each and every aspect our life, we can visualize the truth behind each one of them. This can be taught by a learned person. That learned person who has experienced this truth can be called as a Guru. When we experience this so called truth, we become that truth. Then nothing will sway us and the difficulties in life will be challenges.

That’s why Lord Krishna says,

Avinaasi tu tadviddi yena sarvamidam tatam!
Vinaasamavyayaasya na kaschit kartumarhati!!

Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. None can cause the destruction of that- the imperishable.

The Atman is everywhere. It pervades the whole universe and beyond. What we see in this world is like images on the screen. There is electricity behind a light, fan, refrigerator or a heater.  Same electricity is responsible for different functions. We have to understand the real energy behind the light, fan etc. which is the electricity.  In a similar way there is a truth behind all the duties that we perform every day. We have to learn visualizing the truth behind these actions.

We need to understand the real meaning behind the art of education.

We have to understand the truth behind our relationships.

We have to understand the meaning of wealth in our life.

If we learn to see this inner wisdom, we will be happy and prosperous in our lives. We will not be influenced by the odds of life.

Bhagavadgita 2.4- Saankya Yoga- Sensory perception

Even though we know that soul is eternal we still go through pain and pleasures. As we do not have the experience of self-realization, we cannot avoid the conflicts in life. How can we not suffer when we have pairs of opposites bothering us? How can we not suffer when we experience physical or mental pain?

Bhagavan explains these issues in the coming verses.

Matrasparsastu kounteya seethoshna sukhadukhadah!
Aagamaapaayina anityah taan titikhswa Bharataa!!

O’ Kounteya! The contacts of senses with objects which cause pain and pleasure, heat & cold, have a beginning and an end. They are transient & impermanent; endure them bravely O descendent of Bharata.

Here “Matra” means Indriyas & mind. Mind consists of manas, budhhi, chitta and Ahamkara. Indriyas means our senses and organs of action. Matra also means a scale which can measure the “rupa” that is structure.

If we need to learn about the outward objects we need these senses. The eyes, nose, ears, tongue and skin are the 5 sensory organs. These organs relay any information to the mind that we perceive from outside. This could be either pain or pleasure. Then mind experiences these opposites depending on the situation. We do not even enjoy the pleasures in our life sometimes. Because we are afraid to lose them. These pairs of opposites cripple us at times. That’s why Bhagavan talks about “Seethoshna Sukha dukhadaah” and they are not permanent. They are present in one time and disappear other times.  This universe is also present now but it can disappear. That’s why it is called “MITHYA”. The Lord reassures us not to worry about this impermanent world.

Then he gives the solution to this ultimate problem that we all face every day.

Yam Hi na vyathayanti ete purusham Purushrshbha!
Samadukha sukham dheeram somrutatwaya kalpate!!

O chief among men, that firm man whom, surely, these afflict not, to whom pleasure and pain are same, is fit for releasing Immortality of the self.

We can experience either pain or pleasure from the outward forces (panchabhutas). It is difficult to tolerate too much heat or too much cold temperatures. We need ideal conditions. We are positive when we are with our loved ones and it is uncomfortable around people we do not like. These contacts are named as “Matra”. Whoever can stay balanced despite these circumstances is fit for Moksha (immortality).

Why we are not able tolerate these pairs of opposite?

Main reason is we ignore the truth and we cannot tease the reality of the situation. We have to learn to see what is real, permanent and which is not. The drawback is that we are not even trying to know this truth. All of us have the same ATMAN that is consciousness. If we want to experience this we have to leave certain things. Baba talked about surrendering 5 things namely Pranaas, Indriyas, Manas, Budhhi and Ahamkara.

The Pranaas will merge with Panchabhutas when we leave the body. They are not ours. Indriyas play as per the mind. This manas is the reason why we experience all kinds of problems and pleasures. This mind will depend upon the intellect (budhhi). But the mind won’t listen to intellect all the time. It wants to run after worldly things and gets in trouble. The last one Ego (Ahamkara) is ME & MINE feeling. This will drag into the illusion (Maya). That’s why Baba emphasized the importance of overcoming these 5 things to attain self-Realization. The person who ever overcomes these five is said to be called as Dheera in Bhagavadgita. That person is then eligible for salvation.

OM SRI SAMRDHA SADGURU SAINATHAYA NAMAH!
