Jaatasya hi dhruvo mruthyur dhruvam janma mrtasya cha!
Tasmad apariharyaardhe na tvam sochitumarhasi !!
For certain is death for the born, and certain is birth for the dead; therefore the inevitable you should not grieve.
Bhagavan is speaking in relation to the materialistic world on the out side to motivate Arjuna to follow his Dharma. He had to give him the confidence and self reliance that was essential to perform his duties. Then why he has to talk about this birth and death cycle. For a Jnani (self realized soul) there may not be birth and death, but for ordinary people this is the reality. As long as there is mind, thoughts, and actions there will be rebirth. Arjuna might think that he is responsible for all the actions that he is performing, without understanding that previous karma plays a big role in one's own life.
The Gita says that death is certain for the born and birth is certain for the dead. Even the atheists say that we come from no where and we go no where when we die. This nowhere also signifies that there is unmanifest in between. They might not believe the reincarnation. That will be fine. The Theists ( People who believe in higher power) may have some differences in their believe system but the fundamental belief in God is same. Here some of the religions tried to go beyond science. Our Hindu scriptures explain in terms of consciousness and energy. They tried to show how the universe functions and how it operates. So if God is everywhere there is no place that this So called consciousness do not exist. The same consciousness exists in all living and nonliving beings.
What happens after death may be a mystery for lot of people but Hinduism explains more scientifically. Some of the religions tried to explain this but there could be some fallacies. Here Lord Krishna is talking about more than just death. Our thought process manufactures some of the thoughts where they are turned into actions. These actions give rise to consequences, these in turn will create new ideology and life. So the cycle continues.
The reality behind this "Birth death cycle" is its very nature, a stream of births and deaths which is unavoidable, inevitable fact no intelligent person should complain or cry over. It is like saying "Be a man and take the consequences". It is a direct consequence of our own deeds but not some one else is responsible for our problems.
What happens between Birth and death is what we call life. But what happens between death and Birth is what we call Avyaktha (unmanifest). Let us try to understand this. Since birth to death the humans go through so many emotions in everyday life. Some of them repeat frequently. But there are patterns in each life if we carefully observe. These patterns are due to certain "Vaasanas" some of which are strong. These strong vaasanas are like seedlings and they have to som how come out and manifest. So we need ideal conditions like perfect family, circumstances to full fill these desires. Until the perfect situation is created they can not germinate. So we have to be careful in wishing what we want especially when we are treading the path of spirituality. Because we do not want to be born again and we all need to attain Moksha (salvation). By understanding this truth, we can live our life happily and be content with what we get.
That's why next verse talks about the futility of grieving for this impermanent life.
Avyaktadini bhutaani vyakta madhyaani bhaarata!
Avyakta nidhanaanyeva tatra ka paridevana !!
Beings are unmanifest in their beginning, are seen to be manifest in the middle state and they are unmanifest in the end. Knowing this truth, what is there to grieve about?
The manifest world of today will not be there in the end. We talk about stars disintegrating and being born. This universe is teaching some thing and science confirms this. If the energy is reintegrating and taking a shape in the form of galaxies; why we have hard time accepting this concept of Birth and death cycle. If we pollute our world around us, we face the consequences like natural disasters. This law of karma applies universally in nature. So let us understand the life, do not take it for granted, ignorance about a rule will not excuse us from the consequences.
OM SRI SAI RAM!
