Bhagavan cautioned us not to be hypocrite and showed us the right way
to do our actions (karmas).
Niyatam kuru karma tvam karma jyaayo hyakarmanah!
Sarira-yatraapi cha te na prasiddhyed-akarmanah!!
You perform your bounden duty; for action is superior to inaction.
Even the maintenance of the body would not be possible for you by inaction.
As humans people have right to do only their karmas. The fruits of
their actions may make humans to take life as animals or other some other forms
of life. If we are in these life forms there will be no good or bad deeds. This
only happens in human form. Human actions are binding.
The actions that are performed under the
guidance of the scriptures are also considered as binding. Then what kind of
actions we need to undertake?
Can we completely avoid doing these karmas.
Bhagavan answers these questions in the next
verse.
Yagnaardhaat karmano’nyatra loko’yam
karmabandhanah!
Tadhartha karma kounteya muktha-sanghah
samachara!!
The world is bound by action other than those
performed “for the sake of sacrifice”: do thou, therefore O kounteya! Perform action
for Yagna sake alone and free from attachments.
As long as we are in this body we cannot avoid
karmas. Then it is better to know what kind of actions are appropriate.
Bhagavan told us to convert karma into a karma
yoga. Every action does not bring about bondages upon the doer. We have to just
worry about unintelligent activities. These activities will create more
impressions on our minds. If we do not want the consequences of these actions,
we need to control the desires at the mind and intellect level.
Proper action can be performed as follows.
For actions born out of mind oriented desires:
We have to stay away from illegitimate desires.
We should not fulfill illegitimate desires.
We have to moderate the legitimate desires.
We have to fulfill the legitimate desires
without attachment.
Controlling the actions stemming out of
intellect:
We have stop thinking about the result of action
when performing an action.
We have to avoid falling into the trap of
entitled attitude.
We have to renounce rights.
We have to perform our actions with a duty
minded attitude.
We have to perform actions with a balancing
mind.
OM SRI SAI RAM!
