Our scriptures say that we take the human from after going through so many other life forms. We might have been born so many times in the past even as a human also. We usually call death as leaving this body and we take with us the subtle and causal body but not the physical body. Along with the subtle and causal body we also gather past impressions and past karmas. Based on these our next life will be decided. These factors will decide whether we are going to be rich, poor, animal, human, and how long we have to live. But when Bhagavan is born we call that as Avatar. We like to say “God came down to earth”. That is why this is called Descending avatar. Our human lives are Ascending avatars.
For God to be born as a human the determining factor is not past karmas. The Lord is everywhere and all pervasive. This quality is called as Vishnu which means all pervasive. God is beyond the three gunas or qualities that determine human life. The God has to come down to the human level so that we can communicate and visualize the attributes.
We might have had taken so many lives in the past but we do not remember them. This is actually a gift to mankind otherwise we will be struggling to see our family members all over. We cannot even imagine how difficult it is to remember all that and live a normal life. We may not remember lot of things but we do exhibit our past tendencies in the form of likes and dislikes. When we pass through different grades in the school, we might not remember everything that we studied earlier year but we move on with an essence. This will give us certain maturity to learn and understand better in the next grades. In a similar way whatever we experienced in previous lives will determine our future lives. This is where we develop relationships, likes, dislikes, difficulties, happiness and sickness. If we sit down quietly and look at our current life, we can imagine what we did in the past lives. Bhagavan emphasizes the importance of following the Dharma and to understand the life in terms of karma theory.
The next verse describes how we can reach God if we follow the scriptures.
Janma karma cha mae divyamevam yo vetthi tatvatah !
Tyaktvaa deham punarjanma naiti maameti sah arjuna !!
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
The actions of the Lord are divine and they are beyond the impressions. There is no selfish quality in those actions. There is no doer ship also. All the actions are performed according the needs of the society at that time. The saints also come under this category. Bhagavan himself says that he also comes in the form of great people. They have no special interest in the results of the actions that they perform. They just do what is best for everyone.
If we understand this principle and follow the Karma theory as prescribed, we will have no difficulties in life. If we are consistent in this path and practice the spirituality according to our scriptures we can definitely reach our goal. The lord guarantees the outcome so that we do not have to go through this life and death cycle.
OM SRI SAI RAM!
